TIMOTHY

Gender: Masculine

Usage: English, Biblical

Pronounced: TIM-ə-thee (English)

From the Greek name Τιμοθεος (Timotheos) meaning "honouring God", derived from τιμαω (timao) "to honour" and θεος (theos) "god". Saint Timothy was an energetic, well-trained young Christian who was a companion of Saint Paul on his missionary journeys and was the recipient of two of Paul's epistles that appear in the New Testament, who wrote to him, "Let no man look down on your youth". According to tradition, he was martyred at Ephesus after protesting the worship of Artemis or the Greek moon goddess Diana. As an English name, Timothy was not used until after the Protestant Reformation.
